How to Clean Your Washing Machine Correctly

"Need maintenance advice? We're just a call away."

Keeping your washing machine clean is essential for ensuring your clothes come out fresh and your machine operates efficiently for years to come. Over time, detergent residue, fabric softener, and minerals from water can build up in your washing machine, leading to unpleasant odors and potentially affecting its performance. At Advanced Appliance Repair, we're committed to helping our community get the most out of their appliances. Here's a straightforward guide on cleaning and maintaining your washing machine to keep it running smoothly.

Cleaning Your Washing Machine: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Choose Your Cleaner
You can use a commercial washing machine cleaner, which is formulated to remove residue inside your washer, like Lemi Shine, Affresh, Tide washing machine cleaner   or you can opt for a more natural approach with 2 cups of white vinegar or a mixture of vinegar and baking soda. Both options are effective in breaking down buildup.

Step 2: Run a Hot Water Cycle
Set your washing machine to its hottest temperature, highest load size, and longest cycle. If you have a cleaning cycle, use it. Add your chosen cleaner directly into the wash drum. Do not add any clothes or laundry detergent for this cleaning cycle.

Step 3: Pause the Cycle
If using vinegar and baking soda, pause the cycle halfway through to let the mixture sit in the drum for about an hour. This allows the cleaning solution to soak in and break down residues effectively. If your washer doesn't allow for pausing, don't worry; simply let the cycle run its full course.

Step 4: Clean the Fabric Softener and Detergent Dispensers
While the cleaning cycle is running (or during the pause), remove the fabric softener dispenser, detergent dispenser, and any removable parts from the machine. Soak them in hot water and scrub them clean with a soft brush or cloth to remove any gunk or residue.

Step 5: Wipe Down the Drum and Gaskets
After the cycle has finished, open the door and wipe down the inside of the drum with a damp cloth to remove any leftover residue. Don't forget to clean the rubber gaskets and the door seal, as these areas can harbor mold and mildew. Use a small, soft brush or cloth to get into crevices.

Step 6: Leave the Door Open
After cleaning, leave the washing machine door open to air it out and prevent mold and mildew from forming in a damp environment.

Regular Maintenance Tips
- Run a cleaning cycle once a month to prevent residue buildup.

- Use the correct amount of detergent as recommended by your washing machine manufacturer to avoid excess suds and residue.

- Remove wet clothes promptly after a wash cycle to prevent mold and mildew growth.

- Check and clean the washer filter (if applicable) regularly according to your manufacturer's instructions.

Maintaining your washing machine not only helps extend its lifespan but also ensures your clothes are cleaned effectively every time. Regular cleaning and maintenance are key to keeping your appliance in top shape.
